From Norse mythology, the hammer of the thunder god Thor. The hammer could penetrate anything and always returns to the hand of the person who threw it. Norse warriors used to attach a leather thong to their war hammers, tying the other end to their wrist, so if they threw them at an enemy they could pull it back to themselves. This may be where the idea of Thor's hammer returning came from.
